WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

"God's Elevator Pitch?"

This week we take a break from our summer sermon series.

(Fear not! “Privilege and Promise: This is America” returns the 3rd and 4th Sundays of July and August. The post-worship Sermon Zoom Chat returns those Sundays too. Of course, it is objectively obvious that racism does not take a break, so let’s not stop striving every day to be actively antiracist.)

Imagine conversing with a new acquaintance when she asks you to describe God to the best of your understanding. What would you say? Where would you start?

What is paramount for your understanding of God: concepts, prayers, characteristics, stories, or some combination of them all?

What about the necessary follow up question: So what? What difference does it make in your life and in the world to describe God in that way?

Guided by Psalm 145 and Matthew 11, Pastor Dave will consider those questions and more this Sunday, July 5th, in his sermon, “God’s Elevator Pitch?”

 Join us on on our Woodridge UMC YouTube channel at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Bible Study - Via Zoom

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE  -  ON ZOOM

Join us Tuesday mornings in June at 10:30am on Zoom as we explore the book of Exodus.

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, July 7th:

Hosea, Chapters 15-18, plus any introduction and notes your bible provides.

Questions to consider:

- The poem in Chapter 15 might be the oldest text in the entire bible. What does that tell us about the Hebrews, their experiences, and their understanding of God?
- Why are the Hebrews fighting another battle again already?
- What other biblical stories does this section evoke?
- What questions does this text raise for you?

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak this class is meeting online through Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 10:30AM. Please contact Pastor Dave (pastordave@woodridgeumc.org) to join the conversation. It is a great way to stay connected and all are welcome.

No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. No question is dumb and no one is forced to read the bible in one particular way. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY ON ZOOM

The Wednesday Bible study class on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. on ZOOM. We will be studying the bible verses for the next Sunday's service.  If you want to be a part of the Wednesday class, please contact Pastor Danita.

Office Hours
Our Summer Office hours are in effect. The church office will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The office is CLOSED, Today, Friday, July 3rd. However, because our building is not ready for full activity, we ask that you call before visiting.

Don't Miss Our Next Call

In our ever changing situation, reminders and changes will also come to you as recorded phone messages from Pastor Dave.  Calling Post is one of the tools we use to keep you informed about, and connected to, Woodridge UMC. Please take a moment to add the Calling Post phone number to your Contacts, so you recognize it the next time one of the pastors calls to update you about events in the life of our congregation: 405-308-4474.

CHURCH DATABASE AND DIRECTORY
One of the ways to make sure you don't miss our call is updating your information in our database. We were in the process of updating the church directory when we moved to online services.  We would like to make certain that we are able to reach everyone as person to person contact is still difficult.  Please click on the link here and fill out the form that you are directed to.  We know that many people have switched to only having a cell phone or changed email services and would like to have the most up to date information, so we can stay in touch with our church family.  We would like to be able reach everyone in your household, so there is a place for their information, too.   If you have any problems or questions, please contact the church office here.

Outreach Opportunities

July Outreach Offering:
Grace Children's Hospital & Pediatric Clinic, Haiti

Grace Children’s Hospital, is recognized as Haiti’s leading medical facility dedicated to the treatment of children with tuberculosis (TB). Each year, the hospital receives thousands of children who are suffering from TB, HIV, and other diseases offering inpatient and outpatient services. Even in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, hospital operations were only halted for a few days, and care for the children staying at the hospital never ceased. Grace never turns a child or family away regardless of ability to pay. Fees for services are determined by a sliding scale based on the patient’s income.

The staff members at Grace Children’s Hospital care for hundreds of children a year at the hospital’s inpatient ward. During their stay, which averages three months, Grace Children’s Hospital provides a place of healing and solace to these suffering children. Once a child is on the road to recovery, he or she can also attend school at the hospital. For some, this is the first and only time they will ever experience a formal education. For more information check their website at www.internationalchildcare.org/grace-childrens-hospital.
