"Privilege and Promise: This is America"
"Good Trouble Required"

The life and legacy of Congressman John Lewis was steeped in acts of justice for all people.  But it was also riddled with acts of hatred and prejudice.  People who didn't see the vision of a beloved community that included all people and not just a select few.  And sometimes those acts of hatred and violence come from the places you would least expect.... family and friends.  But John Lewis refused to quit....he fought on even harder.

His life has traces of similarities to that of Joseph.  Viewed as a "dreamer" as a child and not just "one of the guys" doing "guy" things with his brothers.  But Joseph, gifted by God for a different kind of purpose in life, did not let his circumstances (or his brothers) deter him even to the point of leaving him for dead.  Joseph's words rang true for John Lewis' life as well....."what you mean for evil, God meant for good!"

Sometimes life throws us a curve.....puts challenges and circumstances in our way when we are trying to work for justice and good in the world.  When we are trying to make a difference in the world, obstacles appear.  But should these things stop us?  Looking at John Lewis' life the response would be a resounding NO!!!!

Right now, our world needs us who follow Christ to raise the banner high of steadfast commitment to keep up the good work!!!  For the sake of the world and the sake of the Gospel message "GOOD TROUBLE IS REQUIRED!"

Join us on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. on our Woodridge UMC YouTube channel andSee you there!

Pastor Dave's Blog Post
INTERSECTIONALITY and RACISM

As I wrote last week, I’m committed to using this space each week to offer resources that will inform our summer sermon series and the conversations it produces. Some weeks that might mean a lengthy list of links to articles, books, or podcasts. Last week it meant one long form video on White* privilege. Read more here.

Bible Study - Via Zoom

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE  - ON ZOOM

Join us Tuesday mornings in June at 10:30am on Zoom as we explore the book of Exodus.

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, August 18th:

Look over the entirety of Exodus again as we recap the book.

Question to consider:

  • Pick out a “favorite” passage or small section and come prepared to tell us why it moved you, scared you, motivated you, taught you, enraged you, etc.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak this class is meeting online through Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 10:30AM. Please contact Pastor Dave (pastordave@woodridgeumc.org) to join the conversation. It is a great way to stay connected and all are welcome.

No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. No question is dumb and no one is forced to read the bible in one particular way. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY ON ZOOM

The Wednesday Bible study class on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. on ZOOM. We will be studying the bible verses for the next Sunday's service.  If you want to be a part of the Wednesday class, please contact Pastor Danita.

Prayer Booklet For Times Like These from Our Conference
Don’t worry about anything? That’s pretty hard to do these days! Yet it is when we pray that we are able to pour our hearts and minds out to God. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, the NIC Discipleship Task Force asked clergy and laity to submit daily prayers, which were shared on the conference social media sites and website. Those prayers have been assembled into an online booklet, "Times Like These – Prayers of the People," for your reflection and devotion.
