WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

"Rest or Labor?"

This Sunday, September 6th, worship here at Woodridge UMC will look, feel, sound, smell, and even taste different than it ever has before.

That’s a wild claim.

And yet, check what we’ve got:

•    For the first time in six months, we will share in Holy Communion in a safe, contact-free manner.

•    For the first time in at least seven years, our worship experience will be outside.

•    For the first time ever, our worship experience will be outside with masks, personal chairs, and social distancing.

•    For the first time ever, our worship experience will be both outside in person and online.

•    And for the first time ever, our worship experience will include disclaimers:

1.    Weather permitting. The regular Sunday Calling Post call about 9:00AM will share the official word on whether the weather will allow us to proceed outside. So contact Pastor Dave right now if you aren’t receiving those calls!

2.    Our hope and our plan is to live stream the service for all who are unable to be with us in person. However, due to the vagaries of technology, it is possible we will be forced to record the service and then upload it to our YouTube channel afterwards. In that case, there will be some time lapse between when the service ends and when it is available to view on the channel.

3.    A few other disclaimers that will be presented Sunday morning.

A note for our students of all ages: We can’t wait to see you in person! (From a safe distance of course.) If you are able, please bring a backpack to hold up for a blessing during our conversation.

Oh, and Pastor Dave will use Lectionary texts from Romans 13 and Matthew 18 to inform his sermon, “Rest Or Labor?” In which he will consider:

This Labor Day weekend, most of us need a break, a rest, or even just a nap. Yet there is so much unrest in our land. How do we simultaneously care for our whole selves and care for all those experiencing so much pain? Where is God in all this?

Join us for worship at 10:00AM in person under the tent on the front lawn with your chair and your mask, or join us online on our Woodridge UMC YouTube Channel.

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Pastor Dave's Blog Post
"The Chief Who Listens"

Our summer sermon series, “Privilege and Promise: This is America” concluded last Sunday with a powerful sermon from Pastor Danita and an insightful special guest on the Zoom chat following worship. By the end of that Zoom call, I felt encouraged and hopeful about the leader of the Woodridge Police Department, the culture that is in place in the WPD, and the direction the WPD is headed. Why? I base that hope in what Woodridge Police Chief Brian Cunningham told us.

Read what Police Chief Cunningham had to say here.

Bible Study - Via Zoom

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE - ON ZOOM

Join us Tuesday mornings at 10:30am on Zoom as we explore the book of Psalms.

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, September 8th:

Psalm 74, Psalm 79, Psalm 51 and whatever notes your bible provides.

Question to consider:

-As you read these Psalms, what do you feel? What do you think the author was feeling?

-What images of God are evoked by these Psalms? To which of those images do you find yourself most pulled?

In repose to the COVID-19 outbreak this class is meeting online through Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 10:30AM. Please contact Pastor Dave (pastordave@woodridgeumc.org) to join the conversation. It is a great way to stay connected and all are welcome.

No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. No question is dumb and no one is forced to read the bible in one particular way. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY ON ZOOM

Wednesday Bible Study is not meeting this next week. The Wednesday Bible study class on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. on ZOOM. We will be studying the bible verses for the next Sunday's service.  If you want to be a part of the Wednesday class, please contact Pastor Danita.

Prayer Booklet For Times Like These from Our Conference
Don’t worry about anything? That’s pretty hard to do these days! Yet it is when we pray that we are able to pour our hearts and minds out to God. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, the NIC Discipleship Task Force asked clergy and laity to submit daily prayers, which were shared on the conference social media sites and website. Those prayers have been assembled into an online booklet, "Times Like These – Prayers of the People," for your reflection and devotion.

There are also archived training sessions available for viewing such as Intentional Discipleship, How is Your Soul and financial helps.  All of this can be found here: https://www.umcnic.org/online-learning
