WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

"Bread for the Journey"

Hopefully you read this earlier in the week:  This coming Sunday is World Communion Sunday.  It is one of the special designated Sundays observed not just in the United Methodist Church but across denominations.  For us, on this Sunday, in addition to our diversity observances in worship, we receive an additional offering.  This offering supports a diverse mix of national and international ethnic young adults to make a global impact for Christ. Half of the offering benefits World Communion Scholarships for graduate students from the U.S. and other countries; the remainder assists Ethnic Scholarships for U.S. and international undergraduates studying in the U.S. and Ethnic In-Service Training.

Because we are still not worshipping "in-person", we will do something special during the worship service to observe World Communion Sunday.  Please plan to have a piece of bread available for our time of worship  The bread should be something different than what you usually eat.  Whatever you choose, please choose something that is "different" from your usual choice!!!!!

We will take a look at how important bread is in our work as the people of God on a journey.  Yep, we all need a little "BREAD FOR THE JOURNEY"!!  This will definitely be a different kind of World Communion Sunday!!   Come join us on the journey this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. on our Woodridge UMC channel on YouTube

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE - ON ZOOM

Join us Tuesday mornings at 10:30am on Zoom as we explore the book of Psalms.

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, October 6th:

Look over the Psalms and pick out a “favorite” (however you define that).

Question to consider:

-Come prepared to tell us why you picked the Psalm you did: why it moved you, motivated you, encouraged you, taught you, etc.

In repose to the COVID-19 outbreak this class is meeting online through Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 10:30AM. Please contact Pastor Dave (pastordave@woodridgeumc.org) to join the conversation. It is a great way to stay connected and all are welcome.

No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. No question is dumb and no one is forced to read the bible in one particular way. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading.

Northern Illinois Conference
Register for Annual Conference Bible Study
October 8 & 22 at 10am
Rev. Junius Dotson, General Secretary of Discipleship Ministries, will lead us in three separate online Bible studies via Zoom focusing on the Annual Conference's
three strategic goals.   All clergy and laity in the NIC are invited and are encouraged to participate in all three online sessions. (You don't have to be a lay member of Annual Conference.) Registration is required for each session to receive a Zoom link.

Registration is now open for Session 2 on Thursday, October 8 at 10am. This session will focus on our conference's strategic goal of living out the conviction that racism is incompatible with Christian teaching. Click here to register for Session 2 now.

At this time you may also register for Session 3, which will be held on Thursday, October 22 at 10am. This session will focus on NIC's goal to increase the number of vital congregations in the conference. Click here to register for Session 3 now.

All sessions will be recorded and posted on the conference website at umcnic.org/AC2020. The site will also have the latest Annual Conference information.

"Dismantling Racism" Panel Discussion
If you missed last week's Dismantling Racism panel discussion, "The Theological Roots of Racism and Colonialism," the recording is now available to view.
Invite your congregation to watch and engage in conversation and action as together we stand against racism.
Watch now. For more resources to join this movement, visit the NIC Anti-Racism Task Force webpage at umcnic.org/antiracism.

NIC Prayer Network
Dave Holden, retired Local Pastor and educator, offers this week's prayer and devotion:
"Father God, help me to use these unusual times to become more than I have been. Let me remember that I don’t have all the answers. Help me remember that I haven’t walked a mile in anyone’s shoes but my own. Let me remember we are all your children… that every knee will bow… and every tongue confess. Let me learn to accept others… even as you have accepted me. Help me to diminish my arrogance and put on humility as a cloak."
Read more.
The Discipleship Task Force invites laity or clergy who enjoy writing to submit a devotion (250 words), including a Bible verse and prayer. Share what is on your heart with the NIC by emailing discipleshiptf@umcnic.org.

Monthly Aurora District Lay Leader Virtual Meetings
There will be monthly Aurora District Lay Leader meetings on the Third Thursday of every month at 7 pm through December. "See" you there! If you are a lay leader and cannot make a meeting, invite another lay person from your church to attend. These meetings are not just for official lay leaders but any lay person who is a leader in a church! Your Zoom video conferencing invitation will be sent by Leola Tucker (ltucker@umcnic.org). Contact Leola if you would like to join.

Prayer Booklet For Times Like These from Our Conference
Don’t worry about anything? That’s pretty hard to do these days! Yet it is when we pray that we are able to pour our hearts and minds out to God. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, the NIC Discipleship Task Force asked clergy and laity to submit daily prayers, which were shared on the conference social media sites and website. Those prayers have been assembled into an online booklet, "Times Like These – Prayers of the People," for your reflection and devotion.

There are also archived training sessions available for viewing such as Intentional Discipleship, How is Your Soul and financial helps.  All of this can be found here: https://www.umcnic.org/online-learning

Outreach Opportunities

October Outreach Offering:
West Suburban PADS

The mission of West Suburban PADS is to transition people from housing crisis to housing stability. West Suburban PADS is the primary provider of service-supported housing in west DuPage County. The PADS Emergency Shelter is at the foundation of our solution to homelessness, which spans six program areas (including housing, prevention, out-reach, employment, & supportive services). The PADS Emergency Shelter provided overnight shelter to over 1200 homeless men, women and families last year. The shelter operates through broad ecumenical support from the community, involving more than 1,000 volunteers and 40 support congregations at 10 rotating sites.

Our congregation supplies meals and over 30 volunteers to operate the shelter at First UMC in Downers Grove and have been for many, many years. This is probably our congregation’s most important mission.

Retired American Flag Recycling
Woodridge UMC now has an American flag recycling box  thanks to the Eagle Scout Project of Jack Kulaga.  Bring all your old American flags to church and put them in the box now located in Bonfal Hall.  When the box starts to get full, the Woodridge VFW Post will be contacted, and they will collect and decommission the flags.
