"The Curious Case of The Question"

Imagine, if you will, this scene:

            A joint meeting of two groups — two groups who, in normal times, despise each other. But these days are anything but normal. So here they are in the same room with each other conspiring against the one man they now perceive as their common enemy. Their plan? To ask him a question so diabolical that no matter how he responds, he condemns himself politically.

Is this the plot from the latest YA novel or a hit Broadway musical?

Was this a strategy from this week’s Town Hall meetings?

Is this simply an overblown way to describe Political Twitter?

Or, could it be a dramatic paraphrase of this week’s gospel text from Matthew 22?

No matter who you are or what you do to live, thrive, and survive, we all face life’s big questions from time to time — even, or maybe especially, when we least expect them.

What are those big questions?

How do we respond to them?

How might Jesus’ vexing examination of taxation help us here in late 2020?

Pastor Dave will attempt to tackle these questions and more this Sunday, October 18th, in his sermon, “The Curious Case of The Question.”

Worship with us Sunday at 10:00AM on our Woodridge UMC channel on YouTube.

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Pastor Dave's Blog Post

"Priviledge and Promise" All in One Place

“Privilege and Promise: This is America” was our long-term, overarching project the past few months. The “Privilege and Promise” enterprise envelopes 8 sermons, 8 Zoom conversations, and 7 blog posts.

Admittedly, all of that is…a lot.

I’ve recently been told that a good number of you, my dear faithful readers, missed some previous posts. As in, you weren’t aware they existed. What could possibly be going on in your lives and in the world that keeps you from putting ‘Reading Pastor Dave’s blog’ at the top of your To Do list??

Read on and find the links to all of Pastor Dave's Blog Posts on this subject here.

Bible Study - Via Zoom

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE - ON ZOOM

Join us Tuesday mornings at 10:30am on Zoom as we explore the book of Ester.

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, October 20th:
Esther chapters 1-2, plus any introduction your bible provides.

Questions to consider:
—The book of Esther is usually counted among the “Historical” books of the bible. However, given its novella form, it could be considered part of the Wisdom literature of the bible. What does either designation tell us about what to expect from this book?
—What was Queen Vashti’s offense and how (according to the story) was her punishment justified?
—Why do you think Mordecai instructs Esther not to reveal her that she is a Jew?

In repose to the COVID-19 outbreak this class is meeting online through Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 10:30AM. Please contact Pastor Dave (pastordave@woodridgeumc.org) to join the conversation. It is a great way to stay connected and all are welcome.

No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. No question is dumb and no one is forced to read the bible in one particular way. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY ON ZOOM

The Wednesday Bible study class on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. on ZOOM. We will be studying studying Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner's Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine .  If you want to be a part of the Wednesday class, please contact Pastor Danita.

Opportunities/Events

Help WANTED as We USHER in a New Era!

As we prepare to resume in-person worship, we need help. Specifically, we need ushers. But this will be a very different kind of ushering than we’ve done in the recent past. These new ushers play a paramount role in our safety plan.

What does that mean?

Put on a mask and join us Sunday, Oct. 25th at 1:00pm in the Narthex to find out! We will maintain social distancing as we share our new procedures for ushers.

We can and will continue to be welcoming and grace-filled even in this pandemic. Contact Pastor Dave to indicate your interest.

Contact Leola if you would like to join.

Prayer Booklet For Times Like These from Our Conference
Don’t worry about anything? That’s pretty hard to do these days! Yet it is when we pray that we are able to pour our hearts and minds out to God. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, the NIC Discipleship Task Force asked clergy and laity to submit daily prayers, which were shared on the conference social media sites and website. Those prayers have been assembled into an online booklet, "Times Like These – Prayers of the People," for your reflection and devotion.

There are also archived training sessions available for viewing such as Intentional Discipleship, How is Your Soul and financial helps.  All of this can be found here: https://www.umcnic.org/online-learning

October Outreach Offering:
West Suburban PADS

The mission of West Suburban PADS is to transition people from housing crisis to housing stability. West Suburban PADS is the primary provider of service-supported housing in west DuPage County. The PADS Emergency Shelter is at the foundation of our solution to homelessness, which spans six program areas (including housing, prevention, out-reach, employment, & supportive services). The PADS Emergency Shelter provided overnight shelter to over 1200 homeless men, women and families last year. The shelter operates through broad ecumenical support from the community, involving more than 1,000 volunteers and 40 support congregations at 10 rotating sites.

Our congregation supplies meals and over 30 volunteers to operate the shelter at First UMC in Downers Grove and have been for many, many years. This is probably our congregation’s most important mission.

Retired American Flag Recycling
Woodridge UMC now has an American flag recycling box  thanks to the Eagle Scout Project of Jack Kulaga.  Bring all your old American flags to church and put them in the box now located in Bonfal Hall.  When the box starts to get full, the Woodridge VFW Post will be contacted, and they will collect and decommission the flags.
