"Abiding Fluidity"

What does true community look like? As in: beyond disparate people who happen to live in the same geographical area, what makes a community? What images or metaphors can help us understand community?

This week’s text from the Gospel of John give us an answer: a grapevine.

That’s all well and good, especially if you live in a place surrounded by vineyards. But what about those of us who live in the busy suburbs of Chicago? Sure, we could find a vineyard or two if we’re wiling to drive a few hours. But they certainly aren’t part of our daily life. To where or to what do we turn?

Perhaps the letter we call 1 John can help? It offers a beautiful reminder of who God is and what we who would follow God in the Way of Jesus should look like: love. Community should look like love.

But that word “love” has so many different meanings. Which definition do we choose? Fortunately, there is a third reading for this week, a reading from the book known as The Acts of the Apostles. It turns out that these questions of ours are not new. Turns out people have been trying to embody loving community from time immemorial. Turns out a way forward has been with us all along.

•    What connections might we make between the grounded vineyard and the fluid baptism of the Ethiopian?

•    How do we create a community of love, a community that abides in God as God abides in us?

•    How might this story from Acts give us a vision that is not just relevant but required today in 2021?

Pastor Dave will wrestle with these questions and more this Sunday, May 2nd, in his sermon, “Abiding Fluidity.”

Worship with us Sunday at 10:00 a.m. either in person (register here) or online via our Woodridge UMC YouTube channel.

Bible Study - Via Zoom

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE

Our Tuesday bible study continues this week May 4th at 10:30am. Join in on Zoom as we explore the Letter to the Galatians.

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, May 4th:
Chapter 2 of Galatians, plus any introduction and/or notes your bible provides.

Questions to consider:

—Who do you understand the spies from verse 4 to be? What might be their motive?

—Paul says Titus was welcomed by the Jerusalem leaders, but Titus isn’t mentioned as being endorsed like Paul and Barnabas. Why? Just an oversight by Paul? Or something else?

—Verse 16 is sometimes rendered “faith in Jesus” and sometimes “faith (or faithfulness) of Jesus.” What difference does the choice make?

—Have you ever had to confront hypocrisy like Paul does here? How did that go?

Outreach Opportunities

May Outreach Offering: Methodist Border Mission Network

The goal of MBMN is to manifest our Wesleyan heritage in cross-border ministries through mutually empowering collaboration between the Methodist Church of Mexico and the United Methodist Church.

There is a huge need for supplies for the refugees traveling to and through our borders. They travel long distances, sometimes days and weeks, to get to the border. We need supplies in the "Help Centers" which we encourage with the entire border area. Education along with the issues of refugees and immigrants is very important and lacking. Advocacy on behalf of our immigrant/refugee brothers and sisters along with a coordination of available resources and humanitarian efforts on both sides of the border are needed to help this population. A specific need for example would be a new website developed to share the needs of all of our areas and should be kept current and have links to ministries areas that are working.

The MBMN hopes to see leadership development in our churches through bilateral sharing of pastors and promoting ministry with immigrants and refugees. Hopefully, our congregations will develop new and re-newing ministries that welcome the immigrant and refugee to our midst. Developing, supporting and/or encouraging "help centers" or shelters for immigrants and refugees and the provision of other humanitarian needs, assisting in repatriation if we are able. We also hope that we, as United Methodists and the Methodists in Mexico can help to supply health and spiritual needs to those immigrants and refugees coming to/through our areas.
