"There's a Hole in Our Holiness"

There are, it seems, myriad uses of the word “holy.”

Those of us who have been singing in churches for many years might hear lyrics playing in our minds when we think of “holy.” Perhaps something like:

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty…” Or, “We are standing on holy ground, and I know that there are angels all around…”

Maybe we first think of a prayer or litany such as, “Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory…”

“Holy” is of course an adjective that we tend to use to mean pure or set apart. But for many of us steeped in USAmerican Christian culture, “holy” functions more as a proper noun: Holy Spirit, Holy Trinity, Holy Week, Holy Land, Holy Communion, Holy Water, Holy Grail, etc.

This week’s gospel lesson from John offers another portion of Jesus’ extended prayer for his friends. Jesus prays that his followers would be “made holy in the truth.”

But what does that mean?!

Is holy even something to which we aspire?

If so, how might we be made holy?

What are we missing that keeps us from being holy now?

Pastor Dave will consider these questions and more this Sunday, May 16th, in his sermon, “There’s a Hole in Our Holiness.”

Worship with us Sunday at 10:00 a.m. either in person (register here) or online via our Woodridge UMC YouTube channel.

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Bible Study - Via Zoom

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE

Join in Tuesday mornings at 10:30am on Zoom as we explore the Letter to the Galatians.

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, May 18th:
Chapter 4 of Galatians, plus any introduction and/or notes your bible provides.

Questions to consider:

— Some translations render “Jesus the Christ” as “Jesus the Liberating King.” What do each of those signify to you?

— What do you make of Paul’s attempted guilt trip on the Galatians? How would you react to that part of this letter if it was sent to you?

— There are clearly factions among the earliest Christians (at least from Paul’s point of view). How does that make you feel?

— In what ways does Paul’s Hagar/Sarah comparison help and/or hurt his overall argument?

Outreach Opportunities

Suits for Success Update
Bill Denwood, the Executive Director for Suits for Success has sent us an update on the status of this mission.  Follow this link to read his letter.  Bill would also like to express his thanks to everyone at Woodridge UMC for their generosity.  Even during the pandemic, our church is one of Suits for Success most faithful donors.

May Outreach Offering: Methodist Border Mission Network

The goal of MBMN is to manifest our Wesleyan heritage in cross-border ministries through mutually empowering collaboration between the Methodist Church of Mexico and the United Methodist Church.

There is a huge need for supplies for the refugees traveling to and through our borders. They travel long distances, sometimes days and weeks, to get to the border. We need supplies in the "Help Centers" which we encourage with the entire border area. Education along with the issues of refugees and immigrants is very important and lacking. Advocacy on behalf of our immigrant/refugee brothers and sisters along with a coordination of available resources and humanitarian efforts on both sides of the border are needed to help this population. A specific need for example would be a new website developed to share the needs of all of our areas and should be kept current and have links to ministries areas that are working.

The MBMN hopes to see leadership development in our churches through bilateral sharing of pastors and promoting ministry with immigrants and refugees. Hopefully, our congregations will develop new and re-newing ministries that welcome the immigrant and refugee to our midst. Developing, supporting and/or encouraging "help centers" or shelters for immigrants and refugees and the provision of other humanitarian needs, assisting in repatriation if we are able. We also hope that we, as United Methodists and the Methodists in Mexico can help to supply health and spiritual needs to those immigrants and refugees coming to/through our areas.
