"Live Out Loud"

What’s left to be said about mustard seeds?

It starts out super tiny! It grows super big! By golly, it’s that can-do spirit that helps an underdog thrive!

People who have spent any time at all in or around USAmerican Christian churches in the last 50 years or so, have almost certainly encountered Jesus’ parable of the mustard seed. So maybe focusing on a different part of that story — something other than that superlative seed — can help us unlock a surprising insight or two. For instance:

•    What if the thread running through this text from Mark’s gospel is a lack of understanding?

•    How might our experience of faith and life be affected by admitting what we do not know?

•    Counterintuitively, could honesty about our lack of knowledge actually enhance and strengthen our faith and witness to the world?

•    Perhaps in so doing we could even become the kind of living parables to which Paul eludes in his letter to the church at Corinth?

Pastor Dave will attempt to respond to those questions and more this Sunday, June 13th, in his sermon, “Live Out Loud.”

Worship with Woodridge UMC Sundays at 10:00 a.m. either in person — registration no longer required! — or online via our YouTube channel.

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

SHARE THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Sharing the peace of Christ with one another is an important part of our worship life and we are looking for some creative ideas on how to do that.  We will try one this week!!!!  Arrive at church just a few minutes early and we will hand you an "old fashioned church fan" for you to write your message on!  Then during the worship service, our camera crew will pan out the camera and everyone will lift their fans so that the messages are visible to the camera.  If you are more on the "creative" side, feel free to bring additional items to decorate your fan and arrive in time to be finished by the time worship starts at 10:00 a.m..  If you are still worshipping at home, please feel free to make your own church fan or poster with your message, take a picture of your work and send it to office@woodridgeumc.org.  Let's try something new and have fun with it!!!!!

For ease of access, you can now the weekly worship guide attached to this email.

KATRINA SUDMAN AND HER HUSBAND, VINCENT CATALANO PERFORM FOR US
Katrina and Vincent are coming to America for a visit.  They have agreed to perform a concert for us at The First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, located at 1032 Maple Avenue, on Sunday, July 25th, 2021, at 3 pm.  We are so grateful that the Downers Grove Church has offered the use of their Grand Piano and are thrilled to present this FREE concert jointly with our Church.

The concert title is “Symphonic Masterpieces at the Piano” and will include movements of Liszt’s rarely performed arrangements of Beethoven’s Symphonies no. 5 and no. 6 for piano solo, a four-hand symphony by Debussy, and the beloved “Peer Gynt” suite by Grieg.

Come experience this enchanting, entwining of the piano and the orchestra, and congratulate Katrina and Vincent on their recent marriage.

•   Congratulations to all our graduates: Ellie, Lia, Krista, Olivia, Jay, & Kayleigh!

•   In-person gatherings this summer: serving at Feed My Starving Children, playing mini golf, clean up day in the neighborhood, enjoying some frisbee time. Stay tuned!

•   Arriving this fall: the Return of the Confirmands! Working title for this year: “Confirmation Problems” If you or a family member or a friend are in 7th, 8th, or 9th grade for school year 2021-22, Confirmation is for you. More details soon.

Outreach Opportunities

As we begin to gather together for worship and slowly open our building, there are some ongoing opportunities that we want to "revive".  We will get more details from our Outreach Committee at a later time about these and other opportunities.

Suits for Success

There are donation boxes in the hallway by the coat rack just outside the narthex for both men and women's clothing.  The clothes are picked up, dry cleaned and then taken to area men and women's prisons for people being released.  NO belts, shoes, underwear or ties.

"Goin' Green" Shoes & Clothes Recycling Box

Located in the northeast corner of our parking lot, this receptacle is a convenient place to recycle any shoes and your clothes that are at or near the end of their usefulness.

Did you know discarded clothes account for more total landfill space than any other waste item? The “Goin’ Green” Box helps us reduce our waste.

How is this different from our “Suits for Success” ministry?

The big difference is that “Suits for Success” cannot accept shoes of any kind, nor can they accept belts, ties, or underwear. “Goin’ Green” accepts all shoes and clothes.

In summary: Keep bringing your gently used clothing donations to the “Suits for Success” collection boxes in the hallway.

For all shoes and any other clothes, instead of throwing them in the trash, put them in the “Goin’ Green” receptacle in the northeast corner of the parking lot.

West Suburban Food Pantry

We have a basket that we "inherited" from the Faith, Lisle church that is waiting for donations.  It sits in the narthex, usually near the sanctuary doors.  They did not stop operating during the pandemic and there is pending legislation in our state and nation that might cut their corporate donations in large amounts.  Let's replenish our basket!!!

Used Eyeglasses
There is a basket also in the narthex for collecting used eyeglasses.  Jorie would see that her sister, Kendra, got the eyeglasses and that they are recycled to the Lions Club and Gift of Sight groups.  Kendra is continuing this important mission. (Prescription eyeglasses only).

Northern IL Conference "Fill the Truck" Mission Challenge

Help us reach and beat the Conference goal - 6,000 pounds and $1,000 for the Midwest Mission Distribution Center!

We’ve decided to collect the most needed items for the MMDC Personal Dignity Kits:

•   Toothpaste – 2.5 oz. or larger

•   Wash Cloths (Bath)

•   Hand Towels (Bath)

Please deposit your donations in the large labeled basket in the Narthex.

Collection will close on July 1st so don’t procrastinate! Let’s make that basket overflow all over the place!

June Outreach Offering
Northern Illinois Justice for Our Neighbors

The ministry of Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON), initiated by the General Board of Global Ministries in 1999, has served thousands of immigrants across the United States. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) sponsors this program, working in 27 “clinics” in several regions of the United States.

JFON was created to respond to complicated immigration regulations arising from the Immigration Reform Act of 1996. The events of September 11, 2001 and the Patriot Act have worsened the situation, causing many delays in existing and new applications and increasing the number of deportation orders.

The JFON network effectively provides services to the community and a strong forum for advocacy.

This organization, which has visited our congregation, fills a critical role by aiding our neighbors who have immigration status issues. In these times especially, they are most deserving of our support.

Rosecrance - Kinley Charity Care Fund

Founded in 1916 as an orphanage by Methodists, Rosecrance now provides addiction and mental health treatment services to thou-sands of individuals and families each year…many of whom do not have the means to pay for services. The inability of State government today to provide an adequate safety net to meet the growing needs of those neediest families is at a crisis level. Rosecrance is committed to serving these families by redoubling our efforts to increase charity care funded by the generosity of individuals, churches and others.
