WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

"Destiny's Child"

During the next few weeks, we will be traveling through the book of Ephesians as we look at the message Paul gave to the early church.  He talked to the Ephesians about what a diverse group they were -- some were Jews and some were Gentiles -- and how that sometimes makes for difficult conversation.  Paul knew that there needed to be some "ground rules" that had to be put into place for those who were choosing to follow Jesus.  This was his opportunity to remind them of all that had been done on their behalf long before their lives came into being....God had already decided how the story should go.

We know how that can be.... trying to talk with other persons from different cultural/racial/sexual/political backgrounds than we are sometimes seems to be an impossible task.  We believe what we think we know is right and that is the only opinion that matters in the conversation.  You know the adage we live by......"my way is the right way" kind of thinking.

Paul's message to the early church (and a reminder to the current church) was/is not an easy one but it is an important one.  There are different "kinds" of people in the world -- diversity was intentional -- and the sooner we understand and accept that, the closer we will be to reflecting the beloved community God intended.

Paul takes us back to step one in the faith journey and reminds us of the basics....we are destined for greatness.  Each of us......every single one of us.....has the opportunity to be in closer relationship with God.  We are destined to be God's living reflection in the world.  How we do that is different for each of us, but it is the same goal.  As children of God, we are different in many ways, but with the same purpose and goal.  We are indeed "Destiny's Child".  We may not be able to sing as well, but it most definitely is our claim to the beloved community.

Join us in person or on YouTube channel every Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m..

KATRINA SUDMAN AND HER HUSBAND, VINCENT CATALANO PERFORM FOR US
Katrina and Vincent are coming to America for a visit.  They have agreed to perform a concert for us at The First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, located at 1032 Maple Avenue, on Sunday, July 25th, 2021, at 3 pm.  We are so grateful that the Downers Grove Church has offered the use of their Grand Piano and are thrilled to present this FREE concert jointly with our Church.

The concert title is “Symphonic Masterpieces at the Piano” and will include movements of Liszt’s rarely performed arrangements of Beethoven’s Symphonies no. 5 and no. 6 for piano solo, a four-hand symphony by Debussy, and the beloved “Peer Gynt” suite by Grieg.

Come experience this enchanting, entwining of the piano and the orchestra, and congratulate Katrina and Vincent on their recent marriage.

Outreach Opportunities

Want to Help Those Affected by the Tornado?

As we begin to gather together for worship and slowly open our building, there are some ongoing opportunities that we want to "revive".  We will get more details from our Outreach Committee at a later time about these and other opportunities.

Suits for Success

There are donation boxes in the hallway by the coat rack just outside the narthex for both men and women's clothing.  The clothes are picked up, dry cleaned and then taken to area men and women's prisons for people being released.  NO belts, shoes, underwear or ties.

"Goin' Green" Shoes & Clothes Recycling Box

Located in the northeast corner of our parking lot, this receptacle is a convenient place to recycle any shoes and your clothes that are at or near the end of their usefulness.

Did you know discarded clothes account for more total landfill space than any other waste item? The “Goin’ Green” Box helps us reduce our waste.

How is this different from our “Suits for Success” ministry?

The big difference is that “Suits for Success” cannot accept shoes of any kind, nor can they accept belts, ties, or underwear. “Goin’ Green” accepts all shoes and clothes.

In summary: Keep bringing your gently used clothing donations to the “Suits for Success” collection boxes in the hallway.

For all shoes and any other clothes, instead of throwing them in the trash, put them in the “Goin’ Green” receptacle in the northeast corner of the parking lot.

West Suburban Food Pantry

We have a basket that we "inherited" from the Faith, Lisle church that is waiting for donations.  It sits in the narthex, usually near the sanctuary doors.  They did not stop operating during the pandemic and there is pending legislation in our state and nation that might cut their corporate donations in large amounts.  Let's replenish our basket!!!

Used Eyeglasses
There is a basket also in the narthex for collecting used eyeglasses.  Jorie would see that her sister, Kendra, got the eyeglasses and that they are recycled to the Lions Club and Gift of Sight groups.  Kendra is continuing this important mission. (Prescription eyeglasses only).

July Outreach Offering

Grace Children's Hospital and Pediatric Clinic, Haiti

Grace Children’s Hospital, founded in 1967, is recognized as Haiti’s leading medical facility dedicated to the treatment of children with tuberculosis (TB). Each year, the hospital receives thousands of children who are suffering from TB, HIV, and other diseases. The earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010 forever changed the nation of Haiti, and severely damaged the Grace Children's Hospital campus. The hospital has rebuilt transitional facilities that continue to serve the people of Haiti, and have new outreaches to the tent communities near the hospital. Even in the aftermath of the earthquake, hospital operations were only halted for a few days, and care for the children staying at the hospital never ceased.

Inpatient Ward
The staff members at Grace Children’s Hospital care for hundreds of children a year at the hospital’s inpatient ward. During their stay, which averages three months, Grace Children’s Hospital provides a place of healing and solace to these suffering children.
The children receive excellent medical care from professional doctors and nurses, nutritious meals to help them grow healthy and strong, and comfort from the dedicated and loving mamans (nurses’ aides). Once a child is on the road to recovery, he or she can also attend school at the hospital. For some, this is the first and only time they will ever experience a formal education.

All of Grace Children’s Hospital’s programs fees for services are determined by a sliding scale based on the patient’s income. No one is ever turned away because they are unable to pay. For more information check their website at
www.internationalchildcare.org/grace-childrens-hospital.
