First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove Church
1032 Maple Avenue, Downers Grove
Katrina and Vincent scheduled a concert just for our Woodridge
United Methodist Church (WUMC) family. We hope that you
will make every effort to be there and bring your friends and
family. It is a FREE concert and starts at 3 pm on
Sunday, July 25th, at the Downers Grove Methodist
where we have served the homeless prior to the
pandemic. It also provides us an opportunity to
congratulate Katrina and Vincent on their recent
marriage.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors Giving Events for
Tornado Victims at WUMC
Fridays and Saturdays, Aug. 6th & 7th and
Aug. 20th & 21st, Woodridge UMC is co-hosting events with Prince
of Peace Lutheran Church and the Village of Woodridge to
provide needed food, clothing, and other assistance for those
affected by the June 20th tornado.
As a co-host we are asked to provide people
power for these events rather than donation of items. Meaning we need
some volunteers to help on each of those four days!
4:00-7:00pm on the Fridays; 9-00am-12:00noon on the
Saturdays. Please contact Pastor Dave if you
are available to help (pastordave@woodridgeumc.org).
Confirmation Returns This Fall
If you, a family member, or a friend are in 7th,
8th, or 9th grade for school year 2021-22, Confirmation is
for you. Confirmation is not an attempt at
indoctrination, but rather an exploration of the questions
participants bring regarding life, faith, God, the church,
and more. Big questions such as: What even is faith? Where is
God in the midst of suffering? What does it mean to be a
person of faith in the real world of 2021? Please contact
Pastor Dave (pastordave@woodridgeumc.org) to
register and/or for more information.
Glen
Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale Returns
The Glen Ellyn-Wheaton Chorale is excited to be
getting back to singing in person this fall. Auditions
will be held by appointment on August 3 or 10 at
College Church in Wheaton for all voice
parts. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to
9:30. GEWC presents two major concerts each season with
additional appearances. If you are interested in
auditioning, please find more details here.

Problems” If

Moving Forward Together Classes
Love Christian Clearinghouse is holding free
Moving Forward Together classes on Thursday evenings
beginning this September. The program is designed to
help people who are struggling with everyday life and who
seek to make lasting change to achieve their potential.
Click here for the Moving Forward Together participant flyer.
Interested participants must sign-up for orientation between July 2nd and
August 5th, by calling 630-512-8665. Anyone
interested in a volunteer position should contact Donna Adler, Transformational Ministry Coordinator and plan to attend Volunteer Training on August 14th.
We are committed to this content, however, the timing of the
course offerings will be fluid and will be based on the needs
of the participants, and the availability of the volunteers
who come forward to teach the classes. Together we will
transform lives and communities in the name of Christ!

Outreach Opportunities
As we begin to gather together for worship and
slowly open our building, there are some ongoing
opportunities that we want to "revive". We
will get more details from our Outreach Committee at a later
time about these and other opportunities.
Suits for Success
There are donation boxes in the hallway by the
coat rack just outside the narthex for both men and women's
clothing. The clothes are picked up, dry cleaned and
then taken to area men and women's prisons for people being
released. NO belts, shoes, underwear or ties.
"Goin'
Green" Shoes & Clothes Recycling Box
Located in the northeast corner of our parking lot,
this receptacle is a convenient place to recycle any shoes
and your clothes that are at or near the end of their
usefulness.
Did you know discarded clothes account for more
total landfill space than any other waste item? The “Goin’
Green” Box helps us reduce our waste.
How is this different from our “Suits for
Success” ministry?
The big difference is that “Suits for Success”
cannot accept shoes of any kind, nor can they accept belts,
ties, or underwear. “Goin’ Green” accepts all shoes and
clothes.
In summary: Keep bringing your gently used clothing
donations to the “Suits for Success” collection boxes in the
hallway.
For all shoes and any other clothes, instead of
throwing them in the trash, put them in the “Goin’ Green”
receptacle in the northeast corner of the parking lot.
West Suburban Food Pantry
We have a basket that we "inherited"
from the Faith, Lisle church that is waiting for
donations. It sits in the narthex, usually near the
sanctuary doors. They did not stop operating during the
pandemic and there is pending legislation in our state and
nation that might cut their corporate donations in large
amounts. Let's replenish our basket!!!
Used Eyeglasses
There is a
basket also in the narthex for collecting used
eyeglasses. Jorie would see that her sister, Kendra,
got the eyeglasses and that they are recycled to the Lions
Club and Gift of Sight groups. Kendra is continuing this
important mission. (Prescription eyeglasses only).
July Outreach Offering
Grace
Children's Hospital and Pediatric Clinic, Haiti
Grace Children’s
Hospital, founded in 1967, is recognized as Haiti’s leading
medical facility dedicated to the treatment of children with
tuberculosis (TB). Each year, the hospital receives thousands
of children who are suffering from TB, HIV, and other
diseases. The earthquake that struck Haiti on January
12, 2010 forever changed the nation of Haiti, and severely
damaged the Grace Children's Hospital campus. The hospital
has rebuilt transitional facilities that continue to serve
the people of Haiti, and have new outreaches to the tent
communities near the hospital. Even in the aftermath of the
earthquake, hospital operations were only halted for a few
days, and care for the children staying at the hospital never
ceased.
Inpatient
Ward
The staff members at Grace Children’s Hospital care for
hundreds of children a year at the hospital’s inpatient ward.
During their stay, which averages three months, Grace
Children’s Hospital provides a place of healing and solace to
these suffering children.
The children receive excellent medical care from professional
doctors and nurses, nutritious meals to help them grow
healthy and strong, and comfort from the dedicated and loving
mamans (nurses’ aides). Once a child is on the road to
recovery, he or she can also attend school at the hospital.
For some, this is the first and only time they will ever experience
a formal education.
All of Grace Children’s Hospital’s programs fees for services
are determined by a sliding scale based on the patient’s
income. No one is ever turned away because they are unable to
pay. For more information check their website at www.internationalchildcare.org/grace-childrens-hospital.
