WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

"Rules for the Road (part 2):
Be Careful What You Ask For"

We will spend a little time this summer taking a look at some RULES FOR THE ROAD.  Our first trip was with the Good Samaritan in the Gospel according to Luke.  This week we are going to back up a little to review what happened before Jesus left the village of the Samaritans.

Sometimes following Jesus requires a "review" time where we have to be reminded of something we should already have learned.  This week is just a review.  What does it really mean to follow Jesus?  And where is Jesus going anyhow?  Can't we just get the address and meet Him there?  Not quite so easy!!  There are some adjustments to be made and some additional instructions to receive first.  So let's check to make sure we have everything we will need before we get too far down the road.

Join us on Sunday at 9 or 10:30 a.m. as we travel to the village where the Good Samaritan most like hails from.  ALL are welcome.

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

Pastor Dave's Blog

"21 Out of 25"

As I often proclaim, I am bad at math. But sometimes the numbers are so easy to figure, even I can see it: 25-4=21.

For 21 out of the last 25 years -- in other words, from July 1994 until now, July 2019 -- Woodridge UMC has had a female Lead Pastor. We recently celebrated Pastor Danita's official reappointment, meaning that number will continue to grow. The United Methodist Church has ordained women for more than 50 years-- and the earliest known woman ordained to preach came in 1866! So our little statistic really shouldn't be that big of a deal. But I'm convinced that it is.  Read on.

SUMMER WORSHIP SERVICES CONTINUE AT 9:00 & 10:30 AM
We have had many conversations (both in committee meetings and in the parking lot) about having one (1) worship service and especially in the summer. So why are we sticking with our usual two services schedule?

·         We looked at the attendance records for the past couple of years (a graph is available upon request) and our numbers show that we experienced a decrease in attendance when there was one (1) service, instead of the intended increase.

·         For the persons who "spoke up," the 1 worship time was equally too early for some as it was too late for others.  ï‚·

·         While your pastors love to preach anyway, preparation does not take any less time if there is 1 service.

·         We will still print the same number of bulletins and of course the technology does not change.

·         Most importantly, for the persons we are trying to reach (as opposed to us who are already here) having 2 worship experiences gives them choices. We have watched as families have come at the "usual" time frame for worship (10:30-10:45) only to walk away at the discovery that the 1 worship service was nearly over.

So, in light of our findings, the Administrative Council decided we will continue with our 2 service format for the time being.  We will continue to have one (1) worship service on the 5th Sundays following it with a fellowship meal.

Dining Out in July with Pastor Danita
A few weeks ago in response to the preaching of our pastors, some of us gathered for a meal in places that were "different" for us (pushing us beyond our comfort zones).

On Wednesday, July 31st from 5 pm to 7 pm  we will gather at VIP Thai, 3520 Seven Bridges Drive, Woodridge, IL 60517 for Thai food.  VIP Thai is located next to Coldstone Creamery off of Route 53.  It would be helpful to let Pastor Danita know if you will be joining us but it is not mandatory.   Let's have a good time and try something new!!
