"Sing We Now of Christmas, Vol. 4" OR "Why So Serious?"

Last Sunday was the final day of Advent and next Sunday is Epiphany, which means…This Sunday, December 29th, is the only Sunday we get during Christmastide.

(No, Christmastide isn’t something you spilled on your purposefully-ugly sweater. It’s the official, churchy name of the Christmas season. You know, that thing that lasts for 12 days. Don’t worry, no collection of birds are involved in this worship service.)

In other words, this Sunday, December 29th, is a day for us to say:

“We’re in church and we’re singing…we’re in church and we’re SIIINGIIING!!”

Because that’s what we do during Christmas to celebrate Incarnation, God’s ultimate act of solidarity with humanity: we sing!

Oh sure, we will pray, light candles, read scripture, and Pastor Dave will talk a very little bit (What? It’s not impossible for him to talk only a little. It’s Christmas: it’s a time of miracles!)…but, mostly, this Sunday, December 29th, at our one and only worship gathering at 10:00 a.m., we will sing.

We’ve picked a couple Christmas songs that we missed last week and we’ll leave plenty of time for a hymn sing. That’s right, a time where you, the congregation, get to play hymnal DJ and pick what we sing!

Christmas songs, like all our songs, are full of theological statements. We’ll let them do most of the talking in our now annual tradition of Homily and Hymns. But we will also take a few moments to consider that harrowing story from the Gospel of Matthew, in a segment Pastor Dave calls, “Sing We Now of Christmas, Vol. 4” OR “Why So Serious?”

See you in church this Sunday, December 29th, at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;

West Suburban Community Pantry Donation Promotions
The West Suburban Community Pantry offers food for the hungry and resources to empower persons to improve their quality of life.  Our vision is a community without hunger. The Pantry operates year-round with a goal that each eligible family in DuPage County as well as Bolingbrook & Romeoville receive nutritionally balanced food, including meats, dairy, and fresh produce monthly. We are also registered as an emergency food pantry for Illinois. With the help of volunteers and sponsors, our vision is to eradicate hunger within the families and individuals in the DuPage County area. We are dedicated to providing food for the hungry, educating the donor community about existing needs, and supporting advocacy efforts for the hungry. We also work hard to encourage volunteerism and the sharing of resources.

THE MITTEN TREE IS CALLING FOR YOUR DONATIONS
The mitten tree is available in the Narthex to accept your donations of children’s mittens, gloves, warm hats and scarves. The donations are going to Woodridge School District 68. They give them out to children who don’t have appropriate gear for the winter weather. We’ll be harvesting the tree a couple of times. Please donate as you can.

Volunteer
DUPAGE PADS
A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped support our PADS efforts on December 17th and 18th. Because of your continued support and generosity, WUMC provided a night of shelter and a warm dinner and breakfast to 66 overnight guests-35 men, 24 women and 7 children. Our volunteers did an amazing job of providing food to an additional nine guests that arrived as a result of another PADS shelter unexpectedly closing.

YOUR HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! Please note the volunteer slots are for ALL the dates (October, December, February, and April) unless you have already made other arrangements. If you cannot bring the food donations or fulfill your time commitment you have signed up for, please contact Larry Cash so other arrangements can be made.

THANK YOU for your support of this important ministry!

Upcoming dates to participate:
