"A Gift for the Neighborhood"

The movie "Beautiful Day In the Neighborhood" is about a reluctant journalist who is preparing an article on Mister Roger's Neighborhood and ends up with a change of heart about the host of the popular children's program.  Mister Roger's Neighborhood was a pivotal television program that sought to teach children about life, even talking about "hard" things like death, war and racism.  The show began its run during the late 1960's and lasted until the early 2000's.  The program stressed hospitality and kindness, the attributes that we look for in church settings.

The presence of God's spirit makes a difference about how people feel and react within a congregation.  What are those attributes that attract and invite persons into fellowship?  We will look at some of those through the eyes of Mister Roger's Neighborhood as we talk about "A GIFT FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD".  How does the presence of God in our world, our community, our neighborhood make a difference?  Let's take a look at that on Sunday.  Join us at 9 or 10:30 a.m..  ALL ARE WELCOME!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Welcoming to all;
Uniting in service toward greater social justice for all;
Moving forward with understanding and acceptance of all peoples;
Creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our purpose is to offer a safe place and community to all races, cultures, religions, genders, sexual identities, ethnicities, age groups and other beliefs.

WUMC T-Shirts
Now's your last chance to get a WUMC tshirt. We will be placing a final order in a couple of weeks for shirts. The shirts are red and say I am a child of God.  Think of all the places you could wear this shirt and represent the church...Pads, recycling events or even the store!  We will know a final price once we know how many shirts we are going to order.  There is a sheet in the narthex or contact Jorie Manderfield if you have any questions.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY
Our next Bible study for Wednesday night will be JOHN:  Gospel of Light and Life by Adam Hamilton.We will meet on Wednesday evenings through Wednesday, February 19th, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m..  DINNER IS NOT INCLUDED.  The cost is $11.00 per person for the study guide.  Please plan to join us!!  A sign-up sheet and a limited amount of books are available in the narthex.

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE & THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

All are welcome. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, January 21st:
-Gospel of John, chapters 2-3; including any notes your bible provides.

Questions to consider:
-Why do you think John 3:16 is so popular? What context is missed when presenting that verse in isolation?
-Tragically, the gospel of John has often been used to justify anti-semitism. How might these first two chapters be misused for that nefarious purpose?
-These first two chapters give us a Jesus who is at once reticent, confident, powerful, and mysterious. Who is Jesus according to these chapters?

Also, a gentle reminder that using a study bible really helps. “Study bible” simply means a bible that includes introductions, notes, footnotes, and other helps for understanding the text. Study bibles come in just about every version (e.g. NRSV, NIV, CEV, etc.) If you don’t have a study bible, please borrow one from church. Just let us know you need one and we will find one for you to use.

Join us for Yoga Thursdays at 6:30 pm
Yoga is one way to create strength, balance, and flexibility in the body's also a time to practice stillness and develop patience. West Suburban Community Pantry Donation Promotions
The West Suburban Community Pantry offers food for the hungry and resources to empower persons to improve their quality of life.  Our vision is a community without hunger. The Pantry operates year-round with a goal that each eligible family in DuPage County as well as Bolingbrook & Romeoville receive nutritionally balanced food, including meats, dairy, and fresh produce monthly. We are also registered as an emergency food pantry for Illinois. With the help of volunteers and sponsors, our vision is to eradicate hunger within the families and individuals in the DuPage County area. We are dedicated to providing food for the hungry, educating the donor community about existing needs, and supporting advocacy efforts for the hungry. We also work hard to encourage volunteerism and the sharing of resources.

THE MITTEN TREE IS CALLING FOR YOUR DONATIONS
The mitten tree is available in the Narthex to accept your donations of children’s mittens, gloves, warm hats and scarves. The donations are going to Woodridge School District 68. They give them out to children who don’t have appropriate gear for the winter weather. We’ll be harvesting the tree a couple of times. Please donate as you can.

Volunteer
DUPAGE PADS
A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped support our PADS efforts on December 17th and 18th. Because of your continued support and generosity, WUMC provided a night of shelter and a warm dinner and breakfast to 66 overnight guests-35 men, 24 women and 7 children. Our volunteers did an amazing job of providing food to an additional nine guests that arrived as a result of another PADS shelter unexpectedly closing.   We are in need of additional blankets for our PADS guests this winter. If you have old/used blankets you can donate, please bring them to the Narthex and place in the bin next to the PADS information display. Thank you so much for your generosity

YOUR HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! Please note the volunteer slots are for ALL the dates (October, December, February, and April) unless you have already made other arrangements. If you cannot bring the food donations or fulfill your time commitment you have signed up for, please contact Larry Cash so other arrangements can be made.

THANK YOU for your support of this important ministry!
