WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

"Beloved Community"

As our sermon series on “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” continues this Sunday, January 26th, it is fair to wonder, “Is there is really that much to say about Fred Rogers in general and this movie in particular? After all, it has been more than 50 years since his show, “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood” debuted and more than 16 years since he died.”

Respectfully, yes, yes, there is more to say. Consider this from the Esquire article by Tom Junod that inspired the movie: “[Fred] believed, right then, that he was strong enough to enter into battle with that—that machine, that medium—and to wrestle with it until it yielded to him, until the ground touched by its blue shadow became hallowed and this thing called television came to be used ‘for the broadcasting of grace through the land.’”

“Broadcasting grace through the land”…doesn’t that sound wonderful? Doesn’t that also sound like a pretty darn good way to describe both what Jesus was all about and the mission of the church?

Now consider the gospel lesson for this week, Mark 5:21-43, wherein Jesus heals both an adult and a child. Using the power we have to offer healing…couldn’t we describe Fred Rogers’ mission that way?

Grace, power, and healing. How might we allow ourselves to be transformed by the confluence of those three mighty rivers? How might other witnesses help us be transformed? How might we too offer radical hospitality to all whom we encounter?

Pastor Dave will explore those questions and more this Sunday, January 26th, in his sermon, “Beloved Community.”

All are welcome!

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

BISHOP SALLY DYCK ON THE ROAD TO RECONCILIATION

Last year, the news was all about the Special General Conference 2019 and a new a way forward as a church.  The plan that was passed ended up dividing the church even more and increasing harm. As “regular” General Conference 2020 approaches, national headlines declare the United Methodist Church has already split based on the "Protocol for Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation.” It can all be very confusing.

Bishop Sally Dyck wrote an excellent column this week to help us better understand all that is happening:

“This may be the moment in United Methodism when we have just enough reconciliation for us to separate in peace...A compromise (which is what this mediation protocol is) doesn’t make everyone happy or comfortable. But if it is perfected and agreed upon, it will prevent a legal blood bath or the total coming apart of our church.
My question is: what is the alternative to some form of this protocol going forward?
I encourage people to attend our conversations in February across the conference.”

[One of which is happening here at Woodridge UMC on Feb. 13th.]

WUMC T-Shirts
Now's your last chance to get a WUMC tshirt. We will be placing a final order in a couple of weeks for shirts. The shirts are red and say I am a child of God.  Think of all the places you could wear this shirt and represent the church...Pads, recycling events or even the store!  We will know a final price once we know how many shirts we are going to order.  There is a sheet in the narthex or contact Jorie Manderfield if you have any questions.

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE & THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

All are welcome. No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, January 28th:
-Gospel of John, chapters 4-6; including any notes your bible provides.

Questions to consider:
Why was Samaria so hated? Knowing what we do now about propaganda and how history is written by conquerers, how do you view the jewish rift with Samaria?
-In what ways is Jesus’ interaction with the woman at the well so unusual?
-How do all the healings Jesus performs make you feel? Have you ever prayed for healing that did not happen? What was that like for you?

Also, a gentle reminder that using a study bible really helps. “Study bible” simply means a bible that includes introductions, notes, footnotes, and other helps for understanding the text. Study bibles come in just about every version (e.g. NRSV, NIV, CEV, etc.) If you don’t have a study bible, please borrow one from church. Just let us know you need one and we will find one for you to use.

Join us for Yoga Thursdays at 6:30 pm

DUPAGE PADS
A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped support our PADS efforts on December 17th and 18th. Because of your continued support and generosity, WUMC provided a night of shelter and a warm dinner and breakfast to 66 overnight guests-35 men, 24 women and 7 children. Our volunteers did an amazing job of providing food to an additional nine guests that arrived as a result of another PADS shelter unexpectedly closing.   We are in need of additional blankets for our PADS guests this winter. If you have old/used blankets you can donate, please bring them to the Narthex and place in the bin next to the PADS information display. Thank you so much for your generosity

YOUR HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! Please note the volunteer slots are for ALL the dates (October, December, February, and April) unless you have already made other arrangements. If you cannot bring the food donations or fulfill your time commitment you have signed up for, please contact Larry Cash so other arrangements can be made.

THANK YOU for your support of this important ministry!
