"Today's Special: Compassion with a Side of Mercy!"

This week we look at a very familiar passage....the feeding of the more than 5,000 (because the women and children didn't get counted!).  There is so much more to this story that we sometimes overlook.  It follows on the heels of Jesus finding out about the beheading of John.  Jesus was getting into away from the crowd, probably to deal with his own grief and yet people followed him.  Not just a few people, not a small entourage, but over 5,000 people!!!!  Imagine trying to have a little quiet time and you look around to see thousands of people??!!  And yet, Jesus still -- in the midst of his own feelings of grief and sadness -- chooses instead to have compassion on the crowd.

Sometimes when we are in our own feelings, we miss and/or neglect the feelings of others.  Our task as followers of God is to always be present with others, showing compassion and care even when we would rather not. On this journey of faith, we find persons all around us who are hungry -- not just for physical food, but for spiritual food, for companionship, for care and concern.  And as Jesus reminds the disciples...."don't send them away.  You feed them!"

As we look at the story of Jesus feeding the crowd (remember there were more than 5,000!) maybe we will discover new ways to be attentive to the feelings of others, ways to address the hunger of the world, or maybe just those in our own sphere of influence.  As Jesus said to the crowd, we too need to find ways for our lives to say: "TODAY'S SPECIAL:  COMPASSION WITH A SIDE OF MERCY!"

Join us on on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. on our Woodridge UMC YouTube channel and see if we can find more ways to be in touch with others..

Woodridge UMC is an open and loving United Methodist community striving to:

Bible Study - Via Zoom

THE BIBLE FOR CURIOUS PEOPLE  -  ON ZOOM

Join us Tuesday mornings in June at 10:30am on Zoom as we explore the book of Exodus.

Reading Assignment for Tuesday, July 14th:

Hosea, Chapters 19-23, plus any introduction and notes your bible provides.

Questions to consider:

- Judaism has a tradition that “engaging the law is like walking a path.” How might that idea affect our reading and understanding of “The Ten Commandments”?

- We tend to skip over verse 2 when reading “Ten Commandments.” How might it change us to focus on that prologue as the true beginning point of this section?

- What questions does this text raise for you?

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak this class is meeting online through Zoom on Tuesday mornings at 10:30AM. Please contact Pastor Dave (pastordave@woodridgeumc.org) to join the conversation. It is a great way to stay connected and all are welcome.

No prior bible reading or knowledge or expertise needed. No question is dumb and no one is forced to read the bible in one particular way. We will all learn as we go along exploring what the text says, what it leaves unsaid, what history and tradition tell us about the text, and how our own experience influences our reading.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY ON ZOOM

The Wednesday Bible study class on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. on ZOOM. We will be studying the bible verses for the next Sunday's service.  If you want to be a part of the Wednesday class, please contact Pastor Danita.

Office Hours
Our Summer Office hours are in effect. The church office will be open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. However, because our building is not ready for full activity, we ask that you call before visiting.

Don't Miss Our Next Call

In our ever changing situation, reminders and changes will also come to you as recorded phone messages from Pastor Dave.  Calling Post is one of the tools we use to keep you informed about, and connected to, Woodridge UMC. Please take a moment to add the Calling Post phone number to your Contacts, so you recognize it the next time one of the pastors calls to update you about events in the life of our congregation: 405-308-4474.

CHURCH DATABASE AND DIRECTORY
One of the ways to make sure you don't miss our call is updating your information in our database. We were in the process of updating the church directory when we moved to online services.  We would like to make certain that we are able to reach everyone as person to person contact is still difficult.  Please click on the link here and fill out the form that you are directed to.  We know that many people have switched to only having a cell phone or changed email services and would like to have the most up to date information, so we can stay in touch with our church family.  We would like to be able reach everyone in your household, so there is a place for their information, too.   If you have any problems or questions, please contact the church office here.

Outreach Opportunities

July Outreach Offering:
Grace Children's Hospital & Pediatric Clinic, Haiti

Grace Children’s Hospital, is recognized as Haiti’s leading medical facility dedicated to the treatment of children with tuberculosis (TB). Each year, the hospital receives thousands of children who are suffering from TB, HIV, and other diseases offering inpatient and outpatient services. Even in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, hospital operations were only halted for a few days, and care for the children staying at the hospital never ceased. Grace never turns a child or family away regardless of ability to pay. Fees for services are determined by a sliding scale based on the patient’s income.

The staff members at Grace Children’s Hospital care for hundreds of children a year at the hospital’s inpatient ward. During their stay, which averages three months, Grace Children’s Hospital provides a place of healing and solace to these suffering children. Once a child is on the road to recovery, he or she can also attend school at the hospital. For some, this is the first and only time they will ever experience a formal education. For more information check their website at www.internationalchildcare.org/grace-childrens-hospital.
